Chamber music institute 2022

Chamber Music Institute 2022

July 9-24, 2022

Green Lake Festival Chamber Music Institute in central Wisconsin is an extraordinary opportunity for aspiring artists and performers to make music together with greater expression, sensitivity, command, generosity and more; CMI’s students learn by instruction, by example, by collaborating and by doing.

Elizabeth Oakes joins the CMI in her new role as the director, bringing with her decades of experience as a string quartet and chamber music performer, an arts entrepreneur and a highly sought-after chamber music coach and presenter.  She combines forces with a faculty of internationally-acclaimed chamber musicians who are known for their world-class musicianship, dynamic artistry, and a true caring for each student of this outstanding program.

This summer, CMI celebrates string chamber music and will be accepting college and graduate level violinists, violists and cellists. The faculty and staff emphasize a supportive, nurturing environment in which to learn chamber music skills that are also life skills: communication, listening, sharing opinions, flexibility, and taking musical risks.  There will also be an exploration of repertoire ranging from canonic works to contemporary music to composers whose deserved recognition has long been overdue.  During the Chamber Music Institute, student performers will have the opportunity investigate an array of topics such as creating sustainable chamber music career paths, fostering equity in an artistic practice, composing, identifying successful approaches to interdisciplinary work and much more.

Each student lives in a single dorm room and has chamber coachings, private lessons, and performance opportunities, including The Circle of Sound in a historic barn. Students will also have the opportunity to read chamber music with each other and CMI faculty, enjoy the beautiful Ripon/Green Lake area, and have fun!

Successful applicants are matched with other students of similar playing levels and are assigned appropriate repertoire that will both inspire them and help them grow as artists.   The program includes daily chamber rehearsals, master classes, sessions on a range of artistic topics, group recreation, and individual practice, as well as four chamber music performances — two featuring faculty, and two with student/ faculty chamber groups, including our beloved concert in the Green Lake Boston Barn. During free time students often choose to sightread chamber music from the expansive library available. There are also opportunities for community outreach concerts. All participants must be fully vaccinated for covid (including booster).

Participants are featured performers in the Student Chamber Music Celebration Concert at the end of Institute in addition to performances throughout the Institute.  All participants will enjoy concerts by the award-winning institute faculty at no additional charge. Venues include Green Lake’s historic Thrasher Opera House, The Boston Barn, Demmer Recital Hall at Ripon College, and more!

All participants stay in single dorm rooms, with hall bathrooms.

Meals are included.
